Trump Administration Moves to Revoke Key Climate Science Finding

(MENAFN) The Trump administration plans to overturn a long-standing scientific determination that forms the legal basis for federal climate regulations, a step that could significantly weaken US efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions, according to reports.

The policy reversal targets the 2009 “endangerment finding,” which concluded that greenhouse gases pose a risk to public health and welfare. This finding has underpinned Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules regulating emissions from vehicles, power plants, and major industrial facilities under the Clean Air Act.

Administration officials said a final rule, expected later this week, would remove requirements for automakers and other industries to measure, report, and comply with federal greenhouse gas standards for motor vehicles, along with related compliance and reporting programs.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin described the initiative as “the largest act of deregulation in the history of the United States,” according to reports.

Officials indicated that the repeal would not immediately affect regulations for power plants and other stationary sources, but it could set the stage for further rollbacks in the future.

President Donald Trump has long argued that climate rules impose unnecessary burdens on industry and increase energy costs. The administration estimated that rescinding the finding would reduce regulatory costs by over $1 trillion, though it did not provide details on the calculation, according to reports.

Environmental organizations said they plan to challenge the repeal in court, which could delay its implementation for years. Democratic attorneys general from states including California, New York, and Massachusetts warned that eliminating the finding would contravene Supreme Court precedent and disregard the scientific consensus on climate change.
